JR: Hi Dr. Jill! Let’s continue our exploration of one word: share. Last time, we talked about the noun and verb forms.
Dr. J: Perhaps now, we can add in a little more grammar. Lets start with how “share” commonly fits into sentences.
JR: Google’s Ngram Viewer, an online database consisting of thousands of books, tells us the most common words that come before "share" are "to" and "a." The word “to” often marks the infinitive form of the verb. That’s the short word “to” along with the base form of the verb.
Dr. J: The short word “a” is an article – a kind of determiner. It marks the beginning of a noun or noun phrase. But you should know that Ngram Viewer also gives us an important finding: "to share" is far more common than "a share."
JR: What that means is that we are more likely to read something like this:
The children decided to share the blocks.
Or, Dr. Jill didn’t want to share her pizza.
Dr. J: We are somewhat less likely to read a sentence like this:
She bought a share of the company’s stock.
JR: We might also ask this question: What words are likely to come after "share?"
Dr. J: The two most common structures, at least according to Googles Ngram Viewer, are "share of" and "share the."
JR: Now, think back to our earlier examples:
She bought a share of the company’s stock.
The children decided to share the blocks.
Dr. J: Hey! Next time you have to pick up the pizza and earn your share of it! And that’s Everyday Grammar!
