On February 1, 1942, the first Voice of America broadcast to Europe occurred. Today, we celebrate 80 years of bringing news and information to the world in 47 languages. Back in 1942, announcer William Harlan Hale opened the German-language program with the words: “We bring you voices from America. Today, and daily from now on, we shall speak to you about
America and the war. The news may be good for us. The news may be bad. But we shall tell you the truth.”
This message has always been at the core of VOA’s mission: to provide truthful news and information for those with little or no access to a free press.
